Song of Freedom

Song of Freedom, from the Labyrinth of Imagination series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 100 × 70 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The keepers said freedom began at the top of the glass wall and required strong legs. The woman in the wheelchair believed them, so she waited while the colourful animal struck the blocks alone. Each blow made a beautiful crack but no exit. A smaller rhinoceros rolled beside her and asked, ‘If the door opened, where would you choose to go?’ No one had ever asked.

She pointed left. Together they turned, discovering the wall ended only a few metres away. The keepers shouted that it did not count; no glass had been conquered. The woman laughed and chose the road anyway.

Behind her, the large animal stopped fighting the wall and followed. Freedom was not the power to break everything. It was the right to choose a direction.
