The Jester’s Whisper

The Jester’s Whisper, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 120 × 80 cm.

Short description of the artwork

At court, the jester’s voice belonged to everyone but himself. He could imitate the king, flatter the ministers and make a room laugh on command. At night he sat with the dogs and cat, whispering the sentences he could not perform: ‘I’m lonely. I’m angry. I don’t know who I am when nobody laughs.’ The animals never offered advice.

They simply stayed. One morning the king ordered a new joke. The jester opened his mouth, but the cat’s steady gaze followed him from the doorway. ‘Today I have no joke,’ he said.

A dog barked once from the hall. The sound was small, but it carried his real voice back to him. The court did not laugh. The jester did not disappear.
