Jandark

Jandark, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 100 × 110 cm.

Short description of the artwork

Jandark heard two kinds of voices. One rose from the city, demanding proof that she was brave enough to burn for them. The other was quiet and came through the folded paper horse beneath her: ‘Courage can also carry you home.’ She had never considered that. Martyrs received statues; survivors were asked awkward questions.

At the city gate she saw the waiting fire and the rooster announcing another morning. She turned the white horse sideways. The crowd called her coward, traitor and fraud. The paper legs trembled but held.

Years later she returned—not as a statue, but as a living woman with a different battle plan. Her courage had not diminished by choosing life. It had become available for more than one day.
