A clown in the palace

A clown in the palace, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 120 × 120 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The palace crowned a clown because he could make bad news sound cheerful. Each morning he sat on the throne while the giant rooster announced compulsory happiness. Citizens paid their taxes in laughter; anyone who could not laugh borrowed a painted mouth. Soon the clown heard nothing but approval and felt more fraudulent each day.

During the grand celebration, he removed his crown and said, ‘I don’t know how to fix the kingdom.’ The rooster missed his cue. One balloon burst. Then an old woman answered, ‘Good.

Now we can begin.’ People returned their borrowed smiles and brought maps, complaints and bread. The clown stayed in the palace, but the throne became a chair among many. His first honest act as ruler was admitting he was not the whole show.
