Short description of the artwork
The rider had been warned that Zeus’s shadow followed anyone who tried to outrun fear. He laughed and pushed the machine faster. Beneath the water, the horse’s dark reflection grew larger, until it seemed capable of swallowing the whole road. The rider accelerated again.
The shadow did too. Finally the engine failed and silence caught them. Expecting thunder, he looked down. The monster below copied every tremble of his hands.
It was not chasing him; it had been attached to him all along. He placed one palm on the horse’s neck and breathed until the water became still. The shadow remained, but returned to its true size. They continued slowly, with nothing left to prove to the sky.
