Melody of Chaos

The conductor demanded a flawless parade. Every bird had to flap on beat, every wheel turn together, and the rhinoceros place each enormous foot on a painted mark. At rehearsal number ninety-nine, a clown sneezed. A wheel rolled backward, three birds scattered and the rhinoceros sat down on the drum.

The conductor raised his baton to punish them—then heard it: squeaking axles, startled wings, laughter and one deep drumbeat beneath the rhinoceros. The accident had composed something alive. He lowered the baton and listened. That evening the parade entered town with no painted marks.

It was messy, surprising and impossible to repeat. People danced because they could not predict the next beat. The conductor finally understood why perfection had never sounded like music.
