Passage of Time
Short description of the artwork
The traveller built a machine to outrun time and chose a hippopotamus for its engine. Every morning he shouted, ‘Faster—yesterday is catching us!’ They rushed past birthdays, rainstorms and a small boat that kept waving from the sky. At last the machine overheated beside a field of blue flowers. The traveller kicked the wheel.
‘We’re losing time.’ The hippopotamus asked, ‘What colour were the flowers?’ He had no idea. ‘Then time isn’t chasing you,’ the animal said. ‘You’re leaving it behind.’ They stayed until evening and watched every flower close.
Nothing terrible happened. The clock continued, but it no longer drove. From then on, at every beautiful thing, the hippopotamus quietly asked the same question: ‘Did you notice?’
