Steps on Shattered Glass

Steps on Shattered Glass, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 100 × 100 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The jester believed pain was the price of belonging at the palace. So whenever the road offered grass, he guided the black rhinoceros toward broken glass instead. ‘They’ll respect us when they see what we endured,’ he said. The rhinoceros took three steps, then stopped. The jester kicked, pleaded and listed everyone who had suffered more.

The animal did not move. At last the jester climbed down and saw blood beneath feet that had carried him without complaint. He began lifting the shards one by one. No trumpet celebrated him; the balloons drifted on.

When a clear path appeared, he expected to feel undeserving. Instead he felt grief—and then relief. They reached the palace with clean feet. Anyone who respected them less was not worth bleeding for.
