Conscious Captivity

Conscious Captivity, from the Embrace of Imagination series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 90 × 70 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The cube was transparent, and everyone inside knew they were imprisoned. What they did not know was that one wall was only painted to resemble glass. The rhinoceros tested the hardest panels each morning; the clown cycled in circles and called endurance freedom. Outside, a goldfish repeatedly swam through the painted wall.

‘Fish can pass anywhere,’ they explained. One day the clown stopped pedalling long enough to watch closely. The fish did not break a barrier; it crossed a line. He touched the same place and his hand went through.

Terror arrived before joy. If the exit had always existed, leaving would become their choice. The rhinoceros stepped first. Conscious captivity ended not when they saw the cage, but when they accepted the responsibility of the open door.
