Feast of Illusions
Short description of the artwork
At the palace feast, every guest received a smile at the door. The painted grins came in three sizes: polite, delighted and unforgettable. By midnight the clowns’ cheeks ached, but removing a smile meant admitting the party had failed. Then the birthday candles went out. In the dark, nobody could see anyone’s face.
Someone sighed. Another began to cry. A third confessed he hated the cake. The room filled with relief.
When the candles were relit, the painted smiles lay beside the plates like empty masks. The feast was smaller after that: less dazzling, more alive. People ate what they liked and left when they were tired. Strangely, it became the one palace party they remembered with genuine happiness.
