Echo of the Void

Echo of the Void, from the Capturing the Dream series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 60 × 60 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The violinist played inside the glass cube for an audience that never arrived. She called the silence ‘the void’ and believed it proved that no one could hear her. Outside, a man in a wheelchair came every evening. Sound could not pass through the glass, but vibration travelled into the pavement.

He tapped the rhythm back with one finger on his wheel. She mistook it for rain until the night the sky was clear. She stopped playing. Tap, tap—wait—tap.

She answered with her bow. For an hour they held a conversation neither could hear in the usual way. By morning the cube was still closed and the void still vast, but it was no longer empty. Somewhere inside it, an answer had learned her name.
