Fate Among the Waves
Short description of the artwork
The woman had been told that waves decided everything for people in chairs: where they could go, what they could risk and when they should turn back. So she sat upon the hippopotamus’s geometric saddle while others held the rope. A storm arrived and every helper pulled in a different direction. ‘Let fate choose,’ someone shouted.
The woman took the rope herself. She could not command the sea, but she could read the hippo’s breathing and choose which wave to enter. They rose, dipped and lost one bright balloon.
They also reached the far inlet. Fate had not disappeared; neither had danger. But between the waves there had always been a handhold for decision, and it fit her grip.
