Passage to Nowhere

Passage to Nowhere, from the Inner Cosmos series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 80 × 40 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The underwater vessel had a perfect compass, except every direction was labelled NOWHERE. Its rider circled the transparent cube for months, passing the same fish and accusing the same walls. ‘A real journey must have an exit,’ he complained. The hippopotamus-vessel switched off its engine.

In the silence they heard whales singing beyond the glass—and a quieter reply from inside the machine. A hatch, hidden beneath the rider’s seat, opened inward. It did not lead out of the cube; it led into a room he had never entered, filled with maps he had drawn as a child. One showed a place called Here.

They remained underwater, but the voyage changed. Nowhere had not been the end of the map. It was the name he gave a pause he did not understand.
