The King’s Companion

The King’s Companion, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 100 × 70 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The queen’s companion pulled her carriage across the red kingdom and was never addressed by name. At ceremonies the queen thanked the wheels, the weather and sometimes the road, while the animal beneath the ornaments carried every mile. One day he stopped before the throne bridge. Courtiers called it betrayal. The queen raised her whip, then noticed blood beneath the golden harness.

She stepped down for the first time. From the ground, the palace looked smaller and her companion looked impossibly tired. ‘What is your name?’ she asked. He told her.

They crossed the bridge walking side by side, leaving the empty carriage behind. The kingdom later praised her humility. She corrected them: ‘It was not humility. It was finally seeing who had been carrying whom.’
