The Fool’s Revelation

The Fool’s Revelation, from the The collection of the way of happiness series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 140 × 80 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The jester was permitted to tell the truth only if it was funny. So he wrapped hunger in riddles, grief in pratfalls and the king’s cruelty in a song with a catchy chorus. The court laughed and changed nothing. One evening he stood between two solemn ministers and said, without a joke, ‘The city is hurting.’ Silence struck harder than punishment.

He waited for the guards. Instead, one minister removed her ceremonial mask and said, ‘So am I.’ The other sat down. Outside, the balloons continued floating as if no revelation had occurred.

But the jester never added a punchline. By morning people were repeating the plain sentence in the market. Truth had lost its costume, and somehow that made it impossible to dismiss.
