Short description of the artwork
The great fish reflected whatever dream looked most impressive. To the hippopotamus it showed wings; to the motorcyclist, a crown; to the woman, a face everyone admired. They followed it for days, trading their own wishes for brighter ones seen on its scales. Only the smallest hippopotamus saw nothing.
‘I must be empty,’ he whispered. The fish lowered itself until their eyes met. ‘No,’ it said. ‘You’re the first one who hasn’t asked me what to want.’ The little hippo closed his eyes and imagined warm mud, one honest friend and a road with time to stop.
The image appeared—not glittering, but steady. The others stared at their borrowed dreams and began returning them. The fish’s scales darkened beautifully, relieved of so many expectations.
