Dreams of the Celestial

Dreams of the Celestial, from the Inner Cosmos series, is a 2024 oil-on-canvas work by Mahshid Moochani measuring 80 × 40 cm.

Short description of the artwork

The king ordered the flying rhinoceros to carry a golden cage into the heavens and capture one immortal dream. ‘Bring me something no one else can own,’ he said. They climbed beyond weather, applause and even the last bird—except one sparrow that kept landing on the bars. At the highest cloud, the cage was still empty.

The rider blamed the rhinoceros, then the sky. The sparrow hopped inside, sang once and flew out through the open door. The dream had entered, but refused possession. The rider looked down at the kingdom, now no bigger than a button, and laughed at the order.

They returned with an empty cage and a living song. The king called the mission a failure. Everyone who heard the song knew otherwise.
